The taggiasca tree
in the garden

-

olive taggiasche Who has the fortune to have a garden house in Riviera nearly sure will have an olive tree.

Who is not so lucky can try to grow it: young olive trees can be found in whichever greenhouse at reasonable costs.

The olive tree grows slowly, and is necessary at least about twenty years before having a log twisted enough to be "characteristic".
In any case it's possible to "drive" the growth with strong rods, moving them annually to avoid notches on the bark, until the tree assumes the wished shape.

If the tree needs to be planted it's better to think how much and in what direction will grow during years, to avoid drastic and ugly prunings due to arguments with neighbors, branches in front of the windows and similar things.

The olive tree does not need of much irrigation, not even in the warm months: a weekly watering in spring and summer is more than sufficient.

For who don't need to harvest olives, or need always a clean garden, the better solution is to trim branches before the "mìgnole" bloom.
In this way it will be avoided to find the garden (and often the house, too) covered with a thin layer of yellowish pollen.
Moreover the falled olives, beyond to being dangerously slippery, can cause nearly indelibile spots on brick, stone and concrete pavements.
Another advantage of the pruning of the flowers is that the fight to olive parasites does not become necessary, in particolar way to the Dacus Oleæ.
